■ However bloody and cruel it may appear at first glance, a real form of sustainable fishing in the Italian seas is fishing with feluccas in the Strait of Messina. Fishing with the typical boats suitable for catching swordfish. It is a selective and therefore sustainable fishing, because the fisherman sees the goal of his hunt and with the spear catches only the fish he needs. Respecting the marine ecosystem, protecting its biodiversity (as required by one of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development) and leaving enough fish in the sea to allow the species to reproduce, this is the true essence of swordfish hunting. A fishing that contrasts with the excessive industrialization of the sector, which over the years has led to an exploitation of fish resources, thanks to the need to respond to a growing demand, without respecting the natural rhythm of the ecosystem, with the consequent impoverishment of marine resources. A fishing that contrasts with illegal, unregulated and even less sustainable practices, such as trawling, which cause the accidental capture of species not subject to fishing and cause a real environmental shock.
